In the fall of 2022 I was interested in exploring prompt-based image production using AI. I made a few every day, tracking both my understanding of the process and changes to the software—these are all done with Midjourney and/or Diffusion Bee. All images are from text prompts only; no reference images or other media.

I spoke with artist Michael Pellew at the invitation of LAND Gallery; our chat was part of a series of recordings being made with StoryCorps and at the Museum of African American History in D.C. We talked about music, art and our dads. Previously I worked with Michael on an event called LAND of Metal at St. Vitus in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Michael Pellew's drawings and sculptures are humorous ruminations on pop culture. His playful line quality and imaginative cultural observations are simple and succinct. With one pass of his hand he can depict joy, humor and clever character. His subject matter is NYC trains and buses, fashion design, “punk funk freaks from the East Village and around the Tri-State area”, and pop portraits of favorite singers and performers. His characters capture a direct sense of style and spontaneity. Opening Ceremony has sold Michael's greeting cards in Manhattan and Los Angeles. Corporate collections include Citi Bank, JCrew and PAPER Magazine.
LAND is a unique nonprofit day habilitation program that teaches life skills through the modality of art. LAND (League Artists Natural Design) was founded in 2005 by the League Education and Treatment Center (LETC) and serves as both studio and gallery for 16 adult artists with developmental disabilities.

Save As: Supercuts was a live radio show at Wave Farm Radio in upstate New York featuring audio from supercuts—videos in which a fan / hobbyist collected every phrase, action and/or cliche from an episode or series of some show, film or game into a video montage [Andy Baio, 2008]. Listeners were treated to such hits as Romeo Tran's "Every Gear Change In The Fast And Furious Series" and Phil Norden's "Movie Phone Hangups."

In late 2012 I purchased the Whitney Biennial 2004 catalogue for $10 from a used book shop and was surprised to find all 107 of the artists' projects in the box set present. My first thought was "What a deal!"; there's a sticker by Cory Archangel, film strips from Stan Brakhage, a zine from Elizabeth Peyton and 100+ other items for less than $0.10 each. I went online to learn more about them, but almost nothing could be found. So, I assigned myself the task of generating a amateur archive of sorts.
I retyped all of the text found on all of the works in the box, a process that ranged from the fairly straight-forward transcriptions of zines and posters to a more laborious practice, using a photo loop to try and identify all the small bits of text in photos, collages and paintings. I measured each work, making notes on the paper stock.
Slowly Sinking
Slowly Sinking is an investigation and series of actions inspired by Charles Darwin’s book “The Formation of Vegetable Mould Through the Action of Worms.” The project was carried out in London with my friend Vickie Hayward and included a earthworm health survey for the Earthworm Society of Britain, the burning of some sage, and a poem.
