Soft Opening is a freeform music night with Deejay Robert Rhymin’ taking place on second Fridays at Myrtle in East Providence, Rhode Island. RR plays a loose mix of genres; things with a good beat. The venue is a friendly local bar with nice vintage decor; the kind of place you might meet someone new.

One of my all time favorite performances is Stevie Wonder doing Superstition on Sesame Street, with all the kids dancing in the background on a mock city block with apartments and fire escapes. When I began brainstorming a project idea with Mindy from Tom Tom Magazine, I told her this was the energy I wanted–the audience on all sides of performers. Not sure how it developed from there but we landed on this idea of filling the hotel lobby with nearly 20 women drummers who would set up on tables, over peoples’ dinners, on stairs and hallways…anywhere we could fit them. Mindy then scored a few works and acted as band leader –it was a magical night.
